The combination of the cold and the holidays emptied out a lot of the city, or at least kept most of the people indoors. Yesterday and today the streets were unbothered and the parks were nearly empty. While a few indoor spaces are populated, like the Met museum and the occasional bodega, stepping outside of them immediately catapults you back to that unpopulated city. There was only one other person in the laundry room today. It's a feeling I'm enjoying, even with all the bundling up I have to do to enjoy the below-freezing outdoors safely. There's nobody around to bother me and I can move a lot more freely.
In lighting the candles the last couple of nights, it somehow struck me as unreasonable to turn on a ceiling lamp to light up half the apartment when I was just sitting at my computer, and for the first time in a while, used my desk lamp instead. I hadn't forgotten how cozy it is and how much I like it, and it was still good to get that reminder. I'm going to have to keep going with it again into the new year.
