A good use of the morning.
Nov. 3rd, 2018 08:54 pmGoing to services today seemed like the right thing to do. So I went. There was someone inside, as usual, and someone at the door, typically reserved for the large gatherings of major holidays, and someone at the corner, which I've never seen before. There was also someone across the street who might or might not have been security. They could've been a man in a suit waiting for a taxi. I didn't look closely enough for an earpiece.
The Torah portion was the burial of Sarah, which was powerfully resonant. Making sure she was properly buried to honor her memory, and making sure the land was bought and paid for as a way to maintain its status as a memorial in the eyes of the community. The sermon was on feminism, early writings like The City of Ladies, the kinds of weaknesses and strengths allowed to women in the Torah, and the strengths held by women in the world today.
