I stewed a chicken tonight. An old laying hen I got at the greenmarket a while back on impulse that I let simmer in red wine and garlic and rosemary and bay leaves for about seven hours until the meat was falling off the bones. It'd been thawing in my fridge for the past couple of days in preparation for donating blood, but then I came down with a cold, so it's for that, instead. I followed the general guidelines of the hen stew from Always Coming Home, cooking vegetables in the broth after stripping the meat from the carcass, but because I let the broth simmer down with all the bones and skin, I didn't get quite what Le Guin described. I got something a lot closer to the Americanized Chinese food I ate as a kid. Which was just splendid.

Summary:
There's still a Sunnydale. There's still a Buffy Summers living on Revello Drive. There's still strange people with business of their own coming to town. Except this time around, Spike and Drusilla didn't come for the Hellmouth or the Slayer. They weren’t looking for power or fame or glory, and they weren't staying so they could end the world. This time around, it was just as good a place as any other to stop for a while until they were ready to move on again. They weren't expecting anything more.
This time around, they stayed because they found out it was a place they might have a chance at a future.
