With her name on all his papers.
May. 1st, 2016 06:42 pmThe Good Wife ends next week. It's been five seasons of great TV and two seasons of good TV, the pattern of which largely adds some good data to the hypothesis of certain shows having at least one central location that produces good stories so long as the narrative doesn't move far away from it, or eventually returns there. Six Feet Under had the Fisher's kitchen, Scrubs had JD's apartment and Sacred Heart, and The Good Wife has the main law offices and Alicia's apartment.
As it is, with two episodes left, I'm going to enjoy them and hold to the aspirational fantasy of a workplace where everyone wants to be there and is good at their jobs.
My one narrative regret for the show is it never got a "Lower Decks"-type episode, where the firm's employees who aren't major high-powered lawyer-types get their turn in the spotlight: the secretaries, the paralegals, the assistants, the researchers, everyone who doesn't have a major stake in legal politics of whose name goes on the front door. Which is a shame, since it would've been a chance to explore the nuts-and-bolts of how the place operates and provide a great comedy opportunity at the same time - "What do you mean they changed the firm's name again? This is the third time since March!"
That said, there's one thing I want from fandom that might yet come to pass: an Alicia-centered vid to Joni Mitchell's "Cactus Tree." It's a vid I've wanted since season two, and it's a song that's only grown more resonant to Alicia with each passing season. With the show ending, and the canon closing - and the suspicions of what the last two episodes may yet hold - maybe someone else will take this idea and give it what it deserves. The sorrow and the triumph of a woman who's just so busy being free.
