Seeking shelter.
Sep. 21st, 2011 11:42 pmToday was the first of my new internship, and I'm happy for next week. I'll have to make sure to get enough sleep beforehand, since I had some trouble gathering myself up for the first few hours - although given that it was mostly a tour with very little for me to do and focus on, I'm not too surprised. When we started doing actual tasks, I was up and ready.
It's the work and tasks that excite me most. It's like at Feldman, where I was brought on for skills I learned in school, but at this internship, there's a lot of work with direct materials, and that really makes me happy because that's what got me into the business. The ideal of it, at any rate. Most of what we did today was find vintage lobby cards for an upcoming exhibit on silent films by going into the stacks, pulling the folders, and determining if the cards were snazzy enough to be considered for the final exhibit. We got to discuss if the typefaces made it worth the time, or the body language, or the colors - some of the Valentino movies' cards were doing Warhol colors before Warhol was around. There were some seriously gorgeous pieces of work.
There's three of us, two students and myself - one a couple years younger than me, the other a couple of years older. They're cheerful and pleasant, and I had a lot of fun talking to them about TV shows and how the iPhone will put an end to the days of back-and-forth arguing over things like when The Hobbit was published or the scientific name for the blue-ringed octopus.
We also spent some time with our supervisor looking over photographs of Theda Bara. None of them were labeled by movie, so we had to guess which ones went together by general context. We spent more time talking about her face, her dresses, and making up elaborate theories as to what the plots might be.
Also, my supervisor's a fan of Doctor Who. So that's pretty darn cool.
