Cultural events.
Jun. 15th, 2011 10:10 pmIn what might have been an effort to fill up the lecture hall, the Y offered free tickets to residents for an event tonight: Real Women Talk About Real Sex. The women were Erica Jong, Molly Jong-Fast, Eve Ensler, Karen Abbott, Anne Roiphe and Daphne Merkin. I didn't know what to expect, and I think that helped.
A lot of what they talked about was the idea of desire, what that entailed, how society and civilization can work against that. What girls and women and boys and men do and the things they don't think about, how power makes someone feel untouchable and the idea of a conquering sexuality, as well as the notion of being able to follow your desires and embrace them to be a fuller person. How girls are picking up they can use their sexuality without recognizing its reciprocality. Heavy stuff I'm glad I listened to. I'd have happily paid for it, but not having to do so made it something of a treat.
