Walk without rhythm.
Apr. 20th, 2011 03:15 pmIf music videos are a fandom now, one that's big enough to warrant fic, then I'd like to submit two for consideration: Apartment Story and Weapon Of Choice.
I know they're not as dramatic or flashy or fancy as some of the stories archived, and I don't see how that would be a problem in the hands of the right writer. "Apartment Story" in particular - that one doesn't seem to call for a story that'd be big and dramatic, but rather, something softer and gentle. Sweet and awkward, as said here. Like one of the short stories The New Yorker publishes when it's not out to depress people, or if Raymond Carver was feeling happy. Something quiet with a lot going on under the surface that looks at how humans interact with each other in a time and place where certain things are expected, but nobody wants to make the first move. How to make a connection.
Maybe something about the women who dance together at 3:00, or the men drinking beer together at 0:15. The girl with her hair up looking around at 2:07, the stifling feeling one gets in crowds of conversation of always wanting to be two tables over. The woman in the red shoes who got everyone to dance, and the joy that comes from being able to let yourself go.
As for "Weapon of Choice" all I can say is if it's wrong to want a story that explains why someone played by Christopher Walken spends his free time dancing and flying around hotel lobbies - a wizard? a god? Chris Walken himself? - then I don't want to be right.
