My favorite pizza place closed tonight. It wasn't anywhere near the best pizza in New York City, and it was far from the best pizza in the neighborhood. What it was instead was my favorite pizza place simply for its location halfway in between my apartment and the closest subway stop. Quite a few times I'd return from a trip, tired and worn out, and I knew I could stop there on my way back and pick up a couple of slices and a can of something cold, and the pizza would still be warm when I got to my place.
The pizza place was affiliated with one of the neighborhood's lovely established Greek restaurants, and I'm going to miss their grilled halloumi something fierce.
There was a rent hike on the property, which was coupled with the last three years and that even before the pandemic hit, the owner was gearing up to retire. The rent hike is what has it feel sharp - if it'd only been the latter two, I'd have absolutely understood, and the rent is likely what prompted the final closing. I understand these things happen.
As for warm food in my apartment after a trip, knowing I can't bank on convenient pizza anymore, I think I'll do the next best thing and keep some ramen cups around for convenient noodles.
