How it falls.
Aug. 24th, 2021 11:15 pmI got caught in the rain yesterday and the socks I wore are still damp. I'd thought I'd hit a break in the rain, and I had. For about five minutes. Ten minutes of downpour later, it cleared up. Then it began raining again, lighter this time, but steadily. Repeat as needed until the hurricane passes.
It delayed me getting in Sunday afternoon by a fairly significant amount, cancelling the bus I'd planned to take back south from the Catskills. I ended up having to book an Amtrack ride, which itself was a little late in getting back to the city because they wanted to be cautious while riding such wet rails.
I'd ridden the bus up, hoping to ride it back down, getting off and on in Woodstock. I rode back from Rhinebeck, which itself was a lovely little town in a very different way.
I'd been up for the weekend with my family, and overall had a good time. The nadir, even below having to wait on hold for the bus refund to get processed, was a long, slow cave tour - small steps, deep underground, it was fine while we were moving but there was too much standing around and slow walking for me to easily take in the beauty of the place. And it was beautiful. But I couldn't manage with the inching.
The apex might've been getting a good look of the full moon Saturday night from the porch deck. Possibly building a fire with wet wood that steamed and hissed before fully going aflame. Maybe seeing a bear - from the car, at a very safe distance - and getting a glimpse of those bear ears.
Mixing local smoked trout with a local hot sauce for some great sandwiches, not the apex but also fun. Same with catching a small toad. Same with walking around the grounds of the rented cabin, little paths through the grasses and raspberry vines, around the trees and into small lawns and over to a swing. Simply taking in the sight of mountains in the morning mist.
It was lovely to get away for a while, and leave pretty much everything behind. Having to do laundry on Sunday was a suitable way to come down from the trip, and getting so wet in the rain was almost an echo of the nature up in the mountains.
