The telemarketer said, "Hi, I'm calling on behalf of Family Home Security."
I immediately replied, "I don't have a family."
A moment of silence.
"Good bye," I said, and hung up.

During the call, I meant it in the connotation of "I live alone in an apartment with no children or significant others." After the call, I realized just how effective a conversation stopper it'd been - completely unintentionally.
