Archimedes! No!
Jan. 13th, 2012 05:56 pmAt this point I'm pretty well committed to doing these out of order. The rec list will probably come tomorrow when I have some more time to think it over.
Day 13: In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favourite interview, a book) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

As the website says, Not every mad doctor lives in a castle surrounded by villagers with pitchforks. Sometimes they live in the trenches, where there's plenty of spare parts flying around and a pressing need to get inventive with them.
Heavy: Should I be awake for this?
Medic: Well, no. But as long as you are, could you hold your rib cage open a bit?
The night this came out, fandom exploded. People had been waiting for it for months, teeth clenched, hoping that each new update would include this. There were theories and guesses and all people knew was that it'd get here when it'd get here. Monday had a note this would come out Thursday night, and from about five PM EST onward, everyone was hitting their F5 key with atomic clock precision, hoping for it to come.
And then it did. And it was more than anyone had dared to dreamed of.
Of all the Meet the Team videos, Meet the Medic is the longest and most ambitious, packing a lot of story and emotion into its four minute run time. Of all the videos, it has the most dark comedy which runs through the whole game and canon, that sort of pitch-black humor that has you wonder if you should be laughing at this at all, and that makes you laugh even harder - shoving a hand into a colleague's chest cavity to implant an overclocked heart outfitted with an invulnerability mechanism because the heart's too big to fit in easily? All in good fun!
All the videos are designed to give potential players and fans an idea and some information about the class in question in a short amount of time: their role on the team, their in-game strategies, that sort of thing. MTM doesn't disappoint. It's also the video with the most character in it. According to the behind-the-scenes post, development was stalled until they hit on the the idea to focus on the iconic image of the Medic charging a Heavy. From there, it gave them a chance to explore Heavy and Medic's relationship and give the climax that much more dramatic heft. From a fan's standpoint, I couldn't be happier about it - Meet The Spy has more conversation, but MTM has more characters talking to each other instead of about another. And the facial expressions on everyone are to die for.
It's four minutes of bloody hilarious character-driven black comedy. Go check it out.
