Visible illusion.
Feb. 14th, 2011 10:42 pmMy first full day working the Ellis Island archives is hopefully an indication of a slow start to the arrangement. I got off late and had to skip breakfast and run at the dock to make the ferry, splashed coffee on my shirt, and most of the morning was spent being told where things were without much chance for conversation or dialogue. But when I bought a late breakfast in the cafeteria, I tossed crumbs to two sparrows who'd somehow made it into the hall with me, and spent nearly an hour before leaving cataloging in the stacks - a place I've missed for a long time. Doing what I learned how to do, in the place where I want to do it. Hopefully there'll be some more of that on Thursday.
I also got to chat about walking in cities and on ice with a New Zealand-born Sweden-based tourist on the ferry back to Manhattan. The commute's becoming one of the nicest parts of the job.
I didn't get a chance to celebrate Dead Gangsters Day with The Town as I'd planned, simply because I ran out of time in the day and I know that movie warrants my attention. So I just watched some more Deadwood. It's a lot better the second time around, taking my time with it to savor and listen. Also knowing who everyone is, since there's close to thirty major characters.
Although I can't stop myself from wanting a fic that's totally irraitonal and wouldn't make any sense for the characters or the setting, which is Jane purchasing a night with a whores at either the Gem or Bella Union, as some sort of 'specialist' or someone Tolliver wouldn't judge - it's one of those rare stories I'd like to read but can't write, as getting the vernacular would be the death of me, plus the fact that I know it wouldn't make any sense given the setting. Using logic isn't getting rid of wanting to see the story, so I guess I'll just have to wait, leave it alone, and hope it goes away.
