Fandom as escapism.
Jan. 26th, 2011 10:10 pmThanks to the help of a younger brother with a speedier network than the one I've got, and long nights spent wishing to be somewhere else, as of tonight I'm all caught up with Supernatural and can watch new episodes around the same time as everyone else. This means two things: time to get an icon from the show itself, and time to start hunting for fic.
The problem with both of those is that the fandom's so big at this point - I mainlined the first season with
ryuutchi when the second one was half over, and lost interest until the fourth season and mytharc kicked into high gear, and yes, Castiel helped - I don't know if I'll be able to find what I want. For fic, anyway.
ryuutchi can back me up when I say I was more interested in the monsters than the Winchesters. That changed once the show moved out of the moster-of-the-week plot and started dealing with heavier hitters, but for the most part, even though I want to start gulping stories down...I want to start gulping down stories about the angelic hierarchy. Or the relationships demons and angels have with their vessels. Or what Missouri's been up to all this time.
I want to read something about Dean teaching Ben to shoot and Lisa to protect her house and burying his issues about turning into his father. Or Bobby's time in Japan. Or Demian and Barnes and the rest of the fandom. How Ellen started the Roadhouse. Chuck's agent and his editor and how he got his career off the ground. The amount of research that goes into spellcraft, the trial and error people have when they're learning how to do it right, what happens if you use the wrong plants or inflections. Bobby getting back together with Marcy. Crossovers with Brimstone! Crossovers with Deadwood! Crossovers with Hereville! Bring on the selkies and mermaids and the case in Centralia, Pennsylvania!
I'd write that Hereville crossover if I had the time - Sam and Dean working a case with Mirka, Mirka and Castiel having conversations in Yiddish, Sam and Dean dealing with her not hunting on Shabbos which would lead to the inevitable references to The Frisco Kid and The Big Lebowski, Mirka's sword being the thing to kill the monster of the week...it'd be awesome.
I really should be worrying about other things right now, but I'd also like a minimum of angst right before bed. So Supernatural it is.
