Plans to go yesterday didn't go through, so today my parents and I went out to Governor's Island for an afternoon of biking and relaxing. Mostly biking. Evidently, rentals are free all day on Fridays, which means I know what I'm doing next week. I'd better bring a lunch, though - the picking on the island were pretty slim.

After the first circuit around, I commented to my dad it was like a "bonsai Presidio", which might or might not be true but seems accurate enough from the standpoint of "former demilitarized bases stationed at key points in major bay systems with big cities close by." I should go back on another nice day just to take pictures; the website's gallery is nice, but it doesn't have everything. For example, it's missing the firefighter training building. Since most of the buildings aren't in use anymore, the fire department's claimed them for practice - by setting them on fire, so the firefighters can train in something close to real-world situations. Which is really freaking awesome.

I missed a lot zooming around on the bike, although today my major goal was nothing but "zoom around on a bike" so it wasn't much of a loss. I miss that mode of transportation so much - I've got to get one again. They're just right for so many things, and the feeling of zooming never gets old. It's hard for me to describe how good it feels to go at that speed: when I'm out riding and pushing the pedals, it's easier to feel the speed than in a car even if I'm behind the wheel, and even if it isn't all that fast, it lets me look around and take everything in without having to worry about everything all the time. Being aware of the people on the road right next to me is a lot nicer than having to check relative speed to trucks and all the rearview mirrors, and nobody minds if I look to the side for a while to check out a cormorant or a cruise ship that looks big enough to house the population of both Dakotas.

I took some time to detour by a Jazz Age outdoor festival, which was a complete surprise to everyone who just happened to decide to visit the Island that day. There's a gallery of pictures of today here, plus a bit more background information and some photos of other festivals here. Watching everything made me simultaneously joyful I'm in an era when I can wear pants and a little wistful that I didn't have the skills or acumen to participate. Still, the Island's going to be there later, so I don't need to worry about that.

But I'll make sure to remember about sunscreen for next time.

I'm in one of those moods where I want to post all the fic I'm not embarrassed about to a central location for easy reference. Pondering the Remix Duello has something to do with this - just put up an "eligible for remix" tag and sort everything else out.

The major options for repositories right now are the Archive of Our Own and Dreamwidth, both of which seem to offer a fair amount of potential services that I can't capitalize on because they seem designed to reward people who don't have steep learning curves when it comes to understanding their layouts.

As such, is anyone willing to do some hand-holding and soothing in the next week or so?
