Against the door.
Aug. 9th, 2010 11:24 pmFollowing my dad's advice, I'm going to do some of the last bits of packing in my pajamas. There's still sheets on the bed and boxes to tape up, and it's just about done. Today wasn't pretty - three in the afternoon was the low point - but we got almost all the boxes packed up and sent off. The fact that not everything's coming with me didn't help make it easy; I'm too used to thinking of my stuff as a collective unit. Having to set aside a few books to take to a college dorm room's not the same as deciding what stuff's going into storage until I get a job and a place of my own, which is part of what led to a very bad afternoon. I was ready to throw it all away and buy new stuff by two-thirty, but managed to get through that and just set a few things aside.
Things started to get better at five, when two friends came over to raid the last of my food. So for a while, everyone was hanging out in the kitchen eating ice cream and laughing, even my dad. Pretty much everything good I had to work with, from the coconut oil and quinoa to the paprika and cloves, is in a new household somewhere, ready and waiting to be used in something delicious. I'll have to do some follow-up and see what comes of it all.
My dad and I also met up with
letters_in_sand for dinner at a little Italian place nearby, and afterward she came back to the house and took my strawberries home with her. I wish them well.
I feel like there should be more to it than this. My last night in Pittsburgh! Two years! Good and bad memories mixed up together! But being tired pretty much conquers all attempts at introspection. In the meantime, there's some blueberries waiting for me downstairs, and a shower waiting for me down the hall. I'd better get on those before tomorrow gets here.
