11 is Kiss with a fist, 12 American pie. 14 is... Lake Isle of Innisfree? Yeats? Put to music, I guess.

Also 18 is Rain, The Beatles.

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes to all four. 14 is by Cherish The Ladies.

[identity profile] recrudescence.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
16: "Slide" by the Goo Goo Dolls

And! 17: Simon and Garfunkel's "Leaves That are Green"
Edited 2010-05-18 19:27 (UTC)

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes to both.

[identity profile] leaper182.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Oh, Death from the O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack.
12. Don McLean - American Pie
# 15 made me think of a kid's rhyme that you do with clapping. Say Say My Playmate. But I ended up googling it, and I'm thinking you're talking about a released song.

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Right song, wrong artist. Care to guess again?
12. Correct!
15. Released, yes. As a hint, the band's from Brooklyn.

[identity profile] blackmare.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't Cracker do a version of "O, Death"? But I also have another version on Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?. So, technically, that's correct too.

[identity profile] perspi.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh ooh! #13 is Dark of the Matinee, by Franz Ferdinand

[identity profile] perspi.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I just heard it on my own playlist. :)

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
5. It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City-Bruce Springsteen. (2nd guess would be the Bowie cover.)
10. A Foggy Day (In London Town)-Fred Astaire
17. A New England-Kristy McColl
18.

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
5. Your second guess is correct.
10. Right song, wrong artist. Want to guess again?
17. Incorrect.

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
17-Interesting. Cause unless I'm totally delusional, Billy Bragg used that line in A New England, which Kirsty recorded. Oh well. I'll be interested in the reveal.

10-Billie Holiday?

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
17. A quick Google search proves that's correct, but the lyrics belong to a different song.

10. Still no.

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
At least I wasn't losing my mind. (Not over that anyway.)

Pretty much every interpreter of popular song has had a crack at #10.

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The Internet: surprisingly supportive for immediate answers if you know where to look. As I've said, "Why are we arguing? We have the Internet!" And we checked, and the argument fizzled out in under three minutes.

I don't think Neil Hannon has gotten to that one yet. Here's a hint: the artist has another cover on the list.

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't want to cheat.

If Bowie recorded it, I'll be both gobsmacked and happily impressed.

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not cheating if you aren't going to answer the question.

Yep! From the cover album Red Hot & Rhapsody: The Gershwin Groove. You want a copy of the song?

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
By all means! Thanks. :)

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Sent over. Enjoy!

[identity profile] roga.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
7. Ordinary Day/GBS!
12. American Pie/Don MacLean? Madonna? Idk
14. Idk, but it sounds like a cool song! GBS again?

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
7. Correct!
12. Don MacLean. I don't think I've got any Madonna songs, come to think of it.
14. Nope. I'm waiting to see if anyone else knows that group before striking it off.

[identity profile] euclase.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Yes! But can you guess the artist?
6. Right singer - but no points for not knowing the title.
8. Correct!
10. Right song. Can you guess the singer?
19. Correctamundo!

[identity profile] euclase.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
1. guess? dude, it's a folk song. that's like asking me to guess who sings happy birthday. it could be my sixth grade music teacher for all i know. maybe jen titus? that's a pretty trendy version. or rise?

10. same problem as the first song, lol. i don't know which artist you're more likely to have in your collection. maybe you have the rufus wainwright version, or frank sinatra, or the david bowie version. beats me.

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Jen Titus. In this case I thought since her version is so popular for most of my friends-list, that the people who'd likely respond to this post would know of her. But you're right, I was generalizing-from-self again.

10. It's David Bowie. Although until I did this post, I wasn't aware there were so many recordings of the song - I thought it was just three or four.

[identity profile] euclase.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
actually, that's pretty brilliant to go with the jen titus. i think she's on the supernatural soundtrack (or maybe i just have a fanmix from someone made for supernatural, and they put that on there). but yeah, definitely, you're right. if people don't have the o brother version, they have the jen titus version.

...and now that you mentioned david bowie, i'm thinking that you probably sent me BOTH the jen titus and the david bowie, which is why i even have the songs to begin with.

LOLOLOL *headdesk*

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
She's on the soundtrack, and the song was used for promos and released for free from the CW on their website. And come to think of it, I've got the O Brother version too, but it's on the CD instead of the computer.

Heee! I might well have.

[identity profile] euclase.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
omg wait! 15 is tv on the radio! dude, i love them. i didn't even see that one until i read back over the list.

i can't remember the song title. ummmm i think it's be a wolf like me (or maybe just wolf like me) (or maybe just wolf) (there is WOLF somewhere in the title lol!)

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-18 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Wolf Like Me, on the nose.
kernezelda: (FS happy face arms)

4. Roy Orbison, All I Need to Do Is Dream

:)

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-19 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Got it!

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2010-05-19 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ten is striking me as another verse to a familiar standard. Is that April In Paris?

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-19 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't change the song; I just corrected the lyrics. Google, you fool!

[identity profile] joe-pike-junior.livejournal.com 2010-05-19 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
14. I will arise and go now, and go to [Name of song]/And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made
That's the Lake Isle of Innisfree, by Keats. I Googled that one, although it was on the tip of my tongue, because it threw me that it's a poem set to music (presumably). Who sings it?

The Dark Of The Matinee I can remember listening to that album on repeat when it came out. The title track is still one of my "feel good" songs.

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-20 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Cherish The Ladies, off the album Threads of Time.

[identity profile] joe-pike-junior.livejournal.com 2010-05-20 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Are there any lyrics other than Keats?

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-20 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
The song itself is a direct adaptation of the poem, so probably not. As for the rest of what the band's done, I've only got two of their songs so I can't really say, but with ten albums they must have a lot to work with.

[identity profile] nachtschade.livejournal.com 2010-05-19 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
3- Jeff Buckley with... I'm not too sure but is it Nightmares by the sea or something like that?

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-05-20 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
You've got it!
