This morning, I woke up early to pitch in a while at the soup kitchen with my parents' friend. It was taco day, so I helped by processing the cans of beans and offering a suggestion to make opening the bags of frozen meat easier and tidier for the people who were capable of handling pig meat.

If it'd been ostrich or emu, or even camel, I wouldn't have struggled with it. I wouldn't have eaten any for reasons beyond it being raw meat, and I wouldn't have thought much about it - just an ingredient to process. But pig wasn't something I could do. The taboo runs deep.

The suggestion was to cut an X onto the package, rather than try to slit it open on one of the sides. I said to try it once and see how it went, and while it took the other volunteers a couple more seconds to open them, they admitted it was a better way to get the solid chunks of frozen meat out of the packages.

Not much later, my afternoon appointment was cancelled, so I used the time to go to the gym - I've been lifting in sneakers to improve my form, but they're not nearly as useful on the treadmill, giving me a genuine pain in my right hip = and to use up some stuff I had lying around and at the back of my fridge to make beer bread and granola. Not a bad use of the day, overall.
