It took about two hours, start to finish, to get my new phone set up enough to take it out of the Apple store. I first arrived around ten to check on the status of the order for the device itself, and found out it hadn't yet been placed - at least, there wasn't a charge on my account. I didn't have time to worry about that, because I had a ticket for the morning showing of Across the Spider-Verse, which was a wonderful distraction as well as a superb piece of art.

Once that was over, I went back across the street to the store and explained to someone else, as best I could, what I'd been told in my two visits over the last three weeks in addition to the new information from that morning. That on the first of the month, an order had been put in for the device itself, and I'd been told it might be a while before the replacement was ready. I was told to head to the Genius Bar and tell them there, which I did. After doing so, the person I spoke with said the order was placed, and the phone would be ready in a few minutes.

That was when things started moving quick: the new phone came out of the back in a timely manner, the SIM card got swapped out, and it started to ask me questions about passcodes and settings. I'm glad I brought my iPad along - not something that'd been mentioned at any point, just something I did as a precautionary measure in case I needed to check my email - because it helped the iPhone get a few things in order. I deleted a bunch of apps I didn't need, and most of the time I spent in the store was making sure the data downloaded properly, because if something went wrong, I wanted to be around people who knew the technology better than I did. But as it went fine, I was out and on my way soon enough.

The most amusing moment of the data downloading waiting period was someone across from me at the same waiting table was watching TikTok videos on her phone with the volume on, so I did the only thing I could think to do: I leaned all the way over the table to watch along with her, and when she noticed, I pointed out she had the volume on, so it must have been her wanting to share. Not only did she get up and leave me alone, she turned the sound off, which made the rest of the waiting a lot easier.

Back in my apartment, I checked the email timestamps. The order for the new device went through on June 1 and the notification the replacement came through was this afternoon - within five minutes of when I started to ask about it at the Genius Bar.

It's a relief to have a working cell phone again. I'll still use it to call people, and I'll certainly be more careful about water bottles. I just don't quite know how the timetable of the orders fits with everything I've been told, other than to stay suspicious of a tech company that gets rid of features like headphone jacks.
