Last night, I ate dinner on my parents' building's rooftop, and for part of it, a friend of theirs from the building joined us for wine and conversation. Both of those things combined in such a way that I ended up going on a dedicated ramble about public schools and educational policy in the United States, the classism of the concept of learning loss, and the lack of well-defined positive outcomes, touching on the importance of measurable qualities that had me citing Temple Grandin's work with slaughterhouses.

"Are you an engineer?" he asked me.

At the time, I didn't realize what a high compliment it was I'd received, but tonight I have.

Also fun was his husband joining us for a few minutes and the both of them getting surprised and delighted by the hardy kiwis I'd brought for dessert.
