hannah: (Marilyn Monroe - mycrime)
I very nearly bought a $148 dollar hat today. Very, very nearly. It was a vintage pastel top hat, and fit me nicely; I didn't bring it home because I didn't know where I'd put it or when I'd wear it. I saw it about an hour later on another person's head, and I knew that as much love as I'd have given it, that hat found its way to the head it needed to rest upon.

I still got a couple pictures, though.

The reason I tried on the hat to begin with is that I was at a vintage bazaar at the Jazz Age Lawn Party. [personal profile] yellowb said she'd been meaning to make it out there. I said I had, too. The two of us held each other accountable this year, and after a mad scramble through the morning - subway lines being down, dashing through the greenmarket for fresh tomatoes for the picnic - we met up at the ferry building and made our way over the hills to the party.

It was low-key in the best of ways: the sort of key where everyone knows they're there for fun. Some people brought tiny tables and multi-tiered serving dishes for the very serious picnics. Other people just bought a blanket and got food from nearby trucks. The whole place was well-deserving of the word dandy and also extravaganza. Peacocks were a major theme: feathers in headbands, designs on dresses, showing up in the occasional tattoo. Some people wore soldier uniforms, some people cross-dressed, some people just put on shorts and a t-shirt and danced the Charleston in modern sneakers and everyone was okay with that because it wasn't the sort of event to require a dress code. Just to have fun and be good company out in the sunshine on the grass.

There were kids who came out on one of the two dance floors: some little girls in absolutely adorable dresses, some little boys dressed up like tiny Marlon Brandos. There was a dance troupe called the Canarsie Wobblers that came out and did their routine in matching sweaters. There were four beautifully mechanical vintage cars, one of which nobody was allowed to pose with because it was that much of an antique. There was a traveling band which wandered through the picnic area, gathering up musicians as it went.

There were drinks, and even a few people smoking way off in a corner. There's not a lot of spots or times in New York City one can drink alcohol on grass, which was fun, especially since we got a beer for free. All we had to do was pose with a smile.

All in all, worth the mad dash rush through the morning. With plans to go again next year - with a hat already on my head.
