hannah: (Winter - obsessiveicons)
When I was walking in Riverside Park this morning, I noticed a few trees that hadn't lost all their leaves yet - not just for how many leaves there were, but for the particular way autumn colors were flowing into them. From the edges, working its way in, both for the leaves and the trees. I'd look up and see a whole branch full of foliage where each leaf was still green in its heart with a yellow border, autumn wrapping itself summertime and slowly going through. And some trees would be like that to a much bigger scale, still green and alive at the base or close to the trunk, the outermost colors being red or yellow, a sliver of the rainbow, and still autumn coming through.

I knew it'd snow today, and went out for errands before it hit. Things worked out so that I was at the gym when it began, up on the third floor: I looked out the window and there it was, more or less looking through it instead of up into it as it fell. Soft at first, and then harder. When I was done with the workout and standing outside my building, I didn't go inside right away. It was falling too fast to get a good look up inside from the ground, but I tried anyway. The first snow of the season, I had to try.

Autumn and winter on the same day doesn't usually happen. Not with such intensity, at any rate. But it did today, and in both cases, came in from the edges, making its way inside.

It might go back to autumn for a while. It won't last as long as I might want, because I've now seen winter on the edges of the days.
