Remember all the feelings.
Aug. 5th, 2018 09:54 pmSomething went "bonk" with my computer tonight, and it went bonk hard enough I had to call in my brother for semi-professional tech support. It's only semi-professional because he gets paid in fruit instead of money. I tried turning it off and on again, quite a few times, and had to wrestle with it freezing and a gray screen of death, which at least had some novelty value to it.
He got it fixed, thankfully. His best guess is a the irresistible force of an automatic, forced update met the immovable object of an external hard drive, and that was why my computer eventually wouldn't go farther than the login screen before freezing. It didn't require wiping everything clean to get it to work again. Just the added extensions and programs. The data's fine. It just doesn't remember who I am.
My old computer has backups for passwords and bookmarks from, well, when I last used it about this time last year. So that's about 75% of what I currently need and use right now. The other 25% can be cobbled together from what I remember and as needed.
As soon as this laundry's folded, it's onto the cider.
I'll need to add another ritual to the first day of every month. Up there with the rabbit chant and paying my credit card balance in full - backing up passwords and data, syncing accounts and suchlike. Because my guts haven't come down even after almost two hours of pure relief.
