It's nice to work someplace where I can honestly say I'm not having fun and then get everyone laughing. What I'm doing at the Botanic Gardens so far is all routine intake work, mostly cataloging, and I started claims this week. And last week, when the department supervisor asked me if I was having fun doing the journal cataloging, I was honest, and said, "No."

And then I explained that what I was doing wasn't fun the way, oh, baking bread is fun, but I'm having a decent time doing it, it's straightforward and easy to plow through, it's nice to see the 'finished' pile get higher. All that, and I understand what I'm doing isn't going to be fun by the nature of my position - this is all so that other people above me can get to the genuinely pressing and important matters.

That, they all understood, and laughed, and let me get back to the work.

Today, during claims training, I explained that no, it wasn't the woman training me, it's that unless you're wired on three cups of coffee too many it's really hard for computer-based training to be really riveting. She understood perfectly, and I was able to get some backlog done, and next week will see yet more productivity in that front.

Last week, walking around on my lunch break, I went through Magnolia Way, every single tree there and in the rest of the garden deliriously colorful and happy to be so. Seeing so many of them at the peak blooms, all clustered together - and this is also after being lucky enough to pass by a group of people more than happy to point out a great-horned owl and its baby, both of which had me gasping in excitement - was almost too much to take in all at once. All the joy of springtime color, spread out before me. Today in the rock garden, I saw a pair of lizards scurrying through the plants, stopping for whatever lizard reasons they had and then darting off again.

There's more stability in having some place to go during the week. As much as I know there are things I could do on Wednesdays if I didn't go in, I'd much rather head on out there. Even though the work itself isn't fun, I'm looking forward to more next week.

Hopefully I'll get some writing done by then, too.
