Not a bad way to end the year.
Dec. 31st, 2012 02:41 pmAs of right now, I've cleaned out my inbox. All of it. No more unread messages, no pending requests, no unanswered comments. This is the cumulation of three months of dedicated effort, starting when I cleaned out over 1900 items from my inbox. This morning it was 50, then 26, then 8. Then seven, then six...four, two, one. And now, zero.
This won't last, and I know it. I doubt I'll make it another hour like this. It won't be permanent, either; I'll get more messages that'll hang around and take up space before I finally get around to dealing with them, for days or weeks or even months. And there are things outside of my inbox that still need my attention, today, tomorrow, or sometime in the farther future. But for now, for just a little while, it's nice to see that there's absolutely nothing waiting for me.
There is one item in my inbox. Just one. It's staying there, no matter what I do, as a gentle reminder.

If I'm going to keep something in my inbox, I'd like it to be a moment of triumph. That for all the sway the internet holds, it's only as much as I allow.
