Learning curve.
Jul. 11th, 2012 07:56 pmRealizing that out of 14,000 words written so far, maybe half of them are usable, wasn't a happy moment, but a good one to have. Better to figure this out sooner and not later, and now I know how to better shape the story and the words I'm using to tell it.
It's pretty liberating to cut out large chunks of text and not look back, too. There are some parts I like and want to keep, and the rest I'm not going to miss when it goes. Knowing it's going to be better when I'm done is going a long way towards me not feeling bad about jettisoning so much work. Starting over is, in some ways, a lot easier than fixing what's there. Just as Michael Chabon about his second novel sometime.
And I'd be happy to keep working on it if I could keep the narrator's voice in my head for more than six words at a time, but that's not going to be the case tonight. Maybe Saturday I can give it another shot.
