Apr. 10th, 2012 05:25 pmAt most gyms, a standard barbell without any sort of plates on it is called nude, or naked. Also at most gyms, the plates are metal, but at a few that do Olympic weightlifting moves that call for a lot of throwing and possibly dropping, the plates are made out of hard rubber and called, rather unimaginatively, rubbers.
I was doing some Olympic snatches at the gym today, and one of the trainers stopped to help me work on my form. Since I wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing, I had a naked bar. He complained about the equipment available, "You can't have any fun without rubbers."
"Well, sure. How can you have any fun when you're naked without a rubber?"
No lie, he applauded.
