Not to put too fine a point on it.
Jul. 12th, 2011 09:35 pmThree weeks ago, Valve released Meet The Medic, which you all should watch because it's fantastic black comedy and bloody hilarious both figuratively and literally.
Yesterday Valve released Meet The Medic: Behind The Scenes - concept animated storyboards with commentary on the decision-making process. This is the sort of thing I love geeking out over for much the same reasons I geek out over cinematography and prop design, because the behind-the-scenes stuff to make everything work so nobody thinks about it is always worth paying attention to, but there's something else that caught my eye. Let me quote Valve itself:
When people think of the Medic, what do they think of? What's the iconic image?
The Medic, ubercharging a Heavy.
Once we realized what we'd been missing, the story came together in record time. Instead of the medigun we'd explain the origin of the ubercharge, giving us a chance to explore the Heavy and Medic's relationship a bit, not to mention a few gross-out surgery gags.
Let me repeat that: Heavy and Medic's relationship
relationship
They said it, not me. Add in Heavy's in-game lines ("We go together, Doctor!" "My doctor's still alive!" "I love this doctor!"), and stuff like the Beaux and Arrows achievement, and I swear this game is approaching Star Trek: original series levels of slash. Supported by the creators themselves, no less.
This is a seriously great fandom.
