Comes approaching.
Dec. 8th, 2010 11:48 pmIt's so weird where I find people to talk to. The people on the floor who'd rather discuss off-the-shoulder dresses and necklines who've never seen a sci-fi movie from the 70s or 80s...great people, can't talk to them. Librarians I meet by happenstance thanks to my father working at the same university that agree Asimov wrote better robots than humans and are interested in getting into Le Guin...wonderful people I wish I'd had more time with.
I had an informal interview this afternoon with three librarians, all of whom are warm, charming, sweet, and shining examples of the people that make up the profession. I'll do my best to stay in touch with them, since fellow robot fans are always good to find, and they took me out to lunch and gave me plenty of interview tips by sharing stories of what other people did wrong. And since the dessert I got was a sort of Italian doughnut, I finally got to eat some fried dough this Hanukkah.
After we all went our separate ways, I walked back across town through Central Park. Today wasn't wet or windy, just dry and cold and clear. Beautiful, beautiful weather, the sort of day where everything is still and sharp and all the colors are bright, one last day of sunshine before winter comes in earnest. I had my hair up in a bun so my neck and ears got chilled in the good way that comes on sharp-weather days, where the chill just lies on top of the skin without going in deep. I took my time walking and watching little birds climb up trees, and spent some time this evening revising a cover letter and setting aside job listings to go over tomorrow afternoon.
So even after talking to girls that don't know references about eating noodles under giant neon signs in the rain, I had a pretty good day.
