Hang your holiday rainbow.
Dec. 6th, 2010 11:42 pmToday taught me that after last year in Pittsburgh, every winter's going to be a major let-down. There was snow in New York City today, tiny itty-bitty flakes that melted as soon as they touched anything solid and only fell for a half-hour all told throughout the day.
Actually, make that the last two years. I joke about it, but I honestly did move to Pittsburgh to get to know winter, and chilly windy days taunt me with reminders of real deep cold. I've been wearing my winter boots with extra socks since Halloween and it's been warm enough to get away with a sweatshirt, hat, and gloves. I don't think it's quite time yet to graduate to the full winter get-up, but it's coming soon, and still not fast enough for my tastes.
I did get nicely chilly when I spent two-and-a-half hours Saturday morning raking leaves, and quite happily at that. Spite helped get me out of bed, since I knew other girls on the floor wouldn't do anything involving physical effort for any amount of time - that, and I'd already signed up. Thanks to the fresh pigeon feathers scattered around that told me something had a good meal a little while ago, I spotted a juvenile red-tailed hawk, and thanks to their calls, I found some woodpeckers. I spent most of the time chatting with someone with similar geeky interests and strong love of tea, and in a weird turnabout, she was the one who said we needed to "RAKE ALL THE LEAVES!" And yes, I was brave enough to ask her out for coffee when we were done. She turned me down on account of needing to finish a project for a class, but next time the volunter gig was in session she'd have the afternoon to herself. So I guess I'll have another good reason to get out of bed in a couple of weeks.
Today almost all of what I got done was some cooking, grocery shopping, finishing up Boardwalk Empire and trying to get blood drawn at the doctor's as part of a physical. I warned them my veins rolled, and even trying in the back of my hand didn't help - it felt really awesome, though, so I'll drink plenty of fluids and ask them to do it there next time I go in.
As for tomorrow, I guess I'll have to show up and see what happens.
