Homework aside, it's been a good few days.
Because I didn't go to the fangirl brunch last Saturday, I got the chance to hold a torah instead. I got to services about fifteen minutes before people started showing up, early enough I didn't know if I'd come to the right place, and for whatever reason he had at the time, when I was still one of six people there the rabbi asked me if I wanted to carry a torah around the sanctuary before we did the day's main reading.
So I said yes, relieved I'd been doing upper-body stuff at the gym and honored to be asked.
Last night I didn't carry one, though in retrospect I might have been able to ask - but just watching the SimḼath Torah dancing for a while was enough. It's one of the more unambiguously joyful holidays, and right on the heels of Sukkot, after all the Days of Awe, it makes a good end to the season. Friday saw some drizzling and chill and Friday night some rain, and while it's still fairly warm here - though for some reason, heat transfer in my apartment means it's warmer outside than inside, how does that even work - pumpkins have been in the market for weeks, leaves are falling off the trees, and Tumblr has exploded in Halloween expectations and autumnal color palettes.
But really, it's the pumpkins. There were concord grapes in the market in August, but there's no denying the pumpkins.
What's getting me about this is next week I'm going to Pittsburgh for WinCon, and additional obligations plus minimal funding means I can't really get out and enjoy the 'Burgh's fall colors over in the big parks. I'll be downtown at the Golden Triangle and that'll be beautiful, but just looking at it on Google Maps has me thinking about the great photo gallery over the river, or the shows I saw in that one theatre, or the galleries in the Art Crawls I crawled through...it really is a giant small town, and I quite miss it. Except its lack of public transportation. If I ever returned in a capacity other than visitor, I'd have to invest in something with a motor.
