Drop the hammer.

A couple of weeks ago, I said mint juleps need to be made with proper emotional equipoise. Let me say from experience, whatever you're feeling beforehand, pulverizing ice cubes is a very soothing thing. I mean completely pulverizing them, smashing them to itty-bitty bits as the recipe requires.

It helps if the plastic kitchen mallet is an adorable shade of yellow.

I made four juleps tonight, all told, with mine only about two-thirds strength of the rest on account of not enjoying bourbon nearly as much as my father, younger brother, or the family friend who was our dinner guest. There wasn't enough ice to fill the glasses, so we topped them off with seltzer, which also helped mix everything evenly. They came out very nicely, and there's enough bourbon and mint syrup to try again next week.

You know what's also really fun? Smashing oreo cookies to put in chocolate peanut butter pie. Yum...
