Yet another reason to support independents.
Of everything else I'll be able to say about 2015, I know I'll be able to look back on it as a year I got a drink on the house.
There's a coffee shop near my apartment that opened about a year ago, and lately I've been stopping in on almost a weekly basis. It's small, quiet, and charming, a nice out-of-the-way spot to take a few moments to stop and relax. When I stop by, I usually just get an espresso or cup of coffee, drink it before it gets cold, and head on out.
This afternoon, to combat restlessness, I took my dad and brothers on a short walk through the park to the shop - to order something if it was open and just see where it was if it wasn't. We arrived about ten minutes before closing, which was enough time for us to get some hot beverages and enjoy the space. I'd been in earlier today, just as I'd been in on Saturday for the past two weeks, and chatted with the owner just as I'd chatted with her before. And after we placed our orders, she served me a cup of coffee on the house. Just as I like it, because she knew my order.
I know that it was closing time, and it was coffee she wouldn't be able to sell, and that it wasn't eating into her bottom line to give away a cup to a loyal customer.
And none of that matters, because it was good coffee, it was free coffee, and it was delightful.
