Friday night train of thought.
This year's fireworks were barely spotted - just over the Hudosn, in between buildings from my building's rooftop. I could hear them better than I could see them, which made for an interesting night after I realized visibility was so poor there wasn't any point in staying on the roof and just went back to my room. Where I could still hear them. At least I think it was fireworks. There was an emergency vehicle's siren a while ago,; the two sounds were probably related.
Since everyone else in the family was out at other events, my younger brother and I went for dinner at a nearby Italian restaurant. All of the daily specials sounded delicious, and we couldn't decide. So we did the only possible thing: we ordered a bunch of them. Three appetizers, one main, split between the two of us. The standout was the cubed watermelon topped with soft goat cheese, black pepper, and thyme, tossed in olive oil. It built its flavors beautifully.
In the spirit of the season, the holiday, and food experimentation, I'm going to see about making this sometime next week.
