Chelsea afternoon.

I had a doctor's appointment down in the Chelsea neighborhood today, and when it was done I decided to walk over to the Union Square market, since it was only a half-hour away on foot. Walks like that are some of the best ways to get to know a city - having a destination but no set path to get there. It makes for a lot of opportunities to find things I didn't know existed.

Case in point: this bookstore. Which I only found out about because I happened to be walking on that street because I'd crossed with the light a couple of blocks earlier. Just randomly walking around - these things happen. Their oldest book is from the 1870s and in California for an antiquarian book fair. On a whim, I filled out an employee application that isn't likely to have anything come of it, but I don't much care since I'd like to go back anyway even if they don't need an extra pair of hands in the stockroom.

Cafe Grumpy looks fun, too, if I'm ever around there. The Forbes Gallery is pretty close, as these things go, and they apparently have some Edward Hopper paintings I haven't yet seen in person.

Also, I made sure to take a photo of Le Grainne Cafe to make sure I wouldn't forget, because I've got to take myself out there for lunch or dinner when my parents are out of town. Anyone in the city want to join me?

Cafe Grumpy is where all the ex-pat Aussies and kiwis get their coffee, it's kind of an international institution :)

Now I've got to go there. It's a moral imperative!

I love exploring my city on foot. Even catching a different bus than usual, seeing where it takes me.

I think it's sad when people just drive everywhere.

Likewise. Getting out and finding new things, just hoofing it - there's something really nice in that. Being in a car is a good place to be sometimes, but it's too easy to let it cut you off from everything else.

That bookstore sounds amazing, I can understand why you filled in that application. And Café Grumpy looks so cosy and inviting.

I'll have to bring my notebook. It really does look like a good place to scribble some notes.
