Right back home.

2011 seemed to be the year for getting to know myself. There are worse ways to spend my time.

1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?
Moved into my own apartment without anyone with which to share it. Bought a vibrator, and then two more. Finished a story over 50,000 words long. Lived through a hurricane. Deadlifted over 200 pounds.

2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions and will you make more for next year?
I didn't make any. So if I do, even one is infinitely more than zero.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not that I know of.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Not this year.

5. What countries did you visit?
The only times I left New York state - aside from coming back from Puerto Rico - were to go to New Jersey or Washington, DC. I'm getting more and more agorophilic the more time I spend in this city. It's immensely rewarding, but there's no dirt, and there's no sky.

6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
Gainful employment. A romantic partner, but that would probably be harder for me to get. And more muscle mass.

7. What dates from 2011 will remain etched on your memory, and why?
I keep an online journal so I don't have to remember dates, but moving into my new apartment in early August was a pretty big one.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Finishing Put On Your Face and keeping on going with the rest of the fics in that project. And on some level, going on antidepressants.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not having a job.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I've been sick more frequently this year than any other I can remember.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Therapy sessions, my vibrators, and music.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Valve's, for releasing content that kept me going. Fandom's in general. My friends, for not leaving me when I was in bad states and lashing out.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
The girls I used to live with, for reasons I won't elaborate on because I don't want to dig myself into a hole. People who've let themselves be corrupted by power. The people at the New Jersey employment agency who were flat-out unable to help me with anything.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Bills, food, coffee, and media products. Public transportation fees. Computer repairs. Clothing, oddly enough, and I now know what a $500 fancy trench coat looks like. And therapy.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Meet the motherfucking Medic.

16. What song will always remind you of 2011?
Top five songs of 2011: "Exile Vilify" by The National. "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence + The Machine. "Calico Train" by Steve Martin, the vocal version. "Mushaboom" by Feist. "Home" by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes. "Save Me, San Francisco" came too late, in the last weeks of December, to qualify here or there.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
happier or sadder? happier. Really, genuinely happier.
thinner or fatter? about the same. I haven't lost much weight but I can lift more, so whatever.
richer or poorer? poorer, I think. I need to be more careful about the lattes.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Exercised. Written. Applied to more jobs. Gone to museums. Talked to more people. Gotten to work on time. So, pretty much the things that are conductive towards employment or make me happy.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Hit "refresh" over and over instead of dedicating the time to producing content. Been late for things. Given my time to people I didn't want to give it to in the first place.

21. Did you fall in love in 2011?
Not with any breathing humans, no.

22. How many one-night stands?
Do wet dreams count?

23. What was your favorite TV program?
The Good Wife, for its brute force competence, its remembering that people are complicated, and its helping me get into the mindset for working on cover letters.

24. Are you angry at anyone now that you weren't angry at this time last year?
I don't always sustain anger. Grudges and resentment, yes, but anger is too hot for me to hold onto for long periods of time.

25. What were the best books you read?
- In A Sunburned Country, Bill Bryson
- Burn Unit, Barbara Ravage
- Cloudstreet, Tim Winton
- Dancing With Eternity, John Patrick Lowrie
And either The Art of Eating by M.F.K. Fisher or Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The extensive holdings of the New York Public Library.

27. What did you want and get?
A place of my own where I don't have to share the bathroom with anyone.

28. What did you want and not get?
Gainful employment. Greater recognition of my fandom contributions.

29. What was your favorite film of this year?
True Grit, which I saw on the first day of the year. It set the bar pretty high.

30. What did you do on your birthday and how old were you?
I went to a career fair that ended up getting me a lot of swag and an interview - no job, but high interest, which these days counts for a lot - and bought pizza for lunch afterwords. I was 25.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Being hired.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
"I'm over two decades old. When I'm not going to the farmers' market to buy eggs, I'd better look professional."

33. What kept you sane?
Therapy, antidepressants, and fandom.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
It was mostly fictional characters this year.

35. What political issue(s) stirred you the most?
As [livejournal.com profile] newredshoes said, the system being fucking broken.

36. Who did you miss?
Everyone I used to know who I can't go see because geography's gotten in the way.

37. Who was the best new person you met?
I'm going to take the arbitrarily small definition of "met" to mean "shook hands with" and answer with [livejournal.com profile] swankyfunk and the people from Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, where I've worked longer than anywhere else.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011.
You've got sucker's luck/Have you given up?
Does it feel like a trial?
Does it trouble your mind the way you trouble mine?

There's nothing to do except keep on going.
