Getting off the island.
Yesterday I finally took my younger brother over to Brooklyn for a little birthday excursion - lunch out, interesting shops, wandering around, a quiet low-key afternoon type deal. I could've gone to the New York Comic-Con, but I think I had more fun out in Williamsburg. It was a breezy, sunny day, about perfect for meandering slowly and enjoying light on tree leaves, not too cold to make me want to keep my sweatshirt on and just cool enough to make me glad I had it if I needed. After three days of rain, it was great to get out into the sunshine, and after Manhattan, a neighborhood where most buildings are two or three stories tall is a great way to relax the eyes and take in some sky.
We both ordered from the breakfast menu for lunch, and both had eggs - poached for me, soft-boiled for him. After getting coffee down the street and commenting on the neighborhood's architectural trends and the mechanics of cars, I went ahead and followed him while he went around photographing cars and asking for a garage owner's business card. After that, we took notice of the Bedford Avenue Cheese Shop and its large selections of both mustard and jam, followed by the Spuyten Duyvil Grocery, which I've wanted to show him for months now. He was just as happy as I'd hoped he'd be. I picked up a strong Scottish cider and he got a couple of American beers he was curious about and made plans to go back - he really likes his beer.
I picked up a used copy of The Final Solution and a couple of greeting cards in the used bookstore, and he didn't buy anything; I almost got some giraffe-print socks down the street, and he still didn't buy anything. We took our time walking down to the Industrial Business Zone, talking about different parts of New York City and different cities all holding different attitudes and cultures, and took a lot of delight in all the sky and trees. When I realized what I was doing, I basically yelled, "Hey, we're walking in the middle of the street!" And he yelled back, "You can do that here!" Very, very different from Manhattan - it's a lot like Pittsburgh over there, and even reminded me a little bit of my hometown for how low it all was and how easy it would be to bike. I need to head over there on a two-wheeler sometime.
On our way back to the subway, we stopped to share some ice cream, and then headed back to Manhattan to change to meet our grandmother for dinner. All in all, a relaxing, rejuvenating way to spend an afternoon.
And now to keep going with the day's chores, but not before a bit of fun.
Here's a meme where I'll post the working title of a story, and the first sentence, for my most current WIPs. No pairing or summary info - with the house rule that WIPs that aren't current won't be included.
1. Put On Your Face 1.2, Team Fortress 2 Pyro story: They never caught me when I set the hills on fire.
2. Sniper 1.2, Team Fortress 2 Sniper story: He understood, from the way she approached, that she knew what she was doing and what she was after.
