Totally genius.

I went to Governor's Island today and stepped into the Jazz Age. Maybe it's good I don't plan these things, since they're more fun when they're surprises.

My brothers and I wanted to be outside in today's unspeakably nice weather, so we decided on Governors Island. We took a local subway line, all the way in the very first car that was pretty sparse to begin with and somehow managed to empty out except for the three of us for almost ten minutes. In a city like New York, being alone is hard, and being alone in a public space is almost impossible, so when it happens in a place like the subway the moment's almost overwhelming. Being able to forget the training and put my bag down and leave it there caused a little giggle-fit, and we ran back and forth through the car and jumped up and down and hung from the handbars and made fools of ourselves. Then someone else got on and we had to stop. But by then we were almost at the ferry.

From the dress of the other people on line and my memories of the previous year, I realized this was another Jazz Age Lawn Party festival weekend, and double-checked with a poster on a bulletin board to confirm. Not that the bow ties, parasols, and nice hats weren't proof enough.

About the first thing we did when we got to the island was to run on one of the lawns. Then we chased some geese, and took pictures of giant mushrooms. Then we took turns jumping off a hill. It wasn't a big hill, more of a five foot tall incline cut into a larger hill to give a small drop-off into a small sandy area. It was enough to jump off of, and that's what counted. We took running starts and I couldn't manage to get a decent take-off for distance, but I landed all right.

We walked around the Lawn Party, and I left the photography of that event up to the professionals. Except for a quick shot of a couple of sailors. Then we picked strawberries and waved to the fish in the window of the Urban Assembly Harbor School. My younger brother bought a coke for me and a homemade ginger beer for himself, and I swear the drink tasted just like biting into a piece of candied ginger, except with more punch. When my older brother asked what was in it, I just said, "Ginger."

We spent a bit of time looking at the abandoned officer's houses, with the playgrounds taken over by trees and flowers and seagulls yelling at each other. I was in one a while ago, and it's less spooky with other people around - you can call out and someone will call back, instead of the feeling of having to stay quiet in case someone might call back.

There wasn't much left to the afternoon, so we had some feral crabapples and walked back to catch the ferry to Manhattan. The line for the ferry went on for blocks, stretching around with hundreds people waiting everywhere - and the line for cyclists and families with strollers was only a few dozen, right up against the edge of the dock. So we put our game faces on and acted like we were supposed to be there, and got onto the ferry early and arrived in Manhattan with enough time to change into nice clothes and meet my grandmother for dinner.

And that was our adventure.

And boy are my feet tired.

Mare here, hoping you will post some photos. This place sounds amazing, and I want to explore the abandoned houses SO MUCH.
