Hold the gun.

One of the best ways to get into places is to simply walk into them like there's no reason not to. Case in point: fireworks displays.

The roof of my parents' apartment building has a sizable patio-type area suitable for gatherings, dining outside, and views up and down the Hudson. It's also got a fair amount closed off from the general public, most likely because water towers and young children are a bad combination, especially thirteen floors off the ground. Part of the closed-off area faced South with much less obstructing the view than the patio-type area, which mostly faces West.

My older brother and I were on the roof, ready and waiting for the fireworks set to go off at the South end of the island. He told me which areas were off-limits and we walked back and forth, trying to find a good spot. And then I shrugged and walked right over to the gate to the closed-off area, opened it, and walked through. He followed me and closed it behind us, and we settled in with the best view on the roof.

Gorgeous display, massive and wonderful. We could hear it all the way uptown, the smoke filling the air and everything shining and bright. We fell into exchanges of "whoa" and "yeah" and "wow" pretty fast, which was fine, since we could keep looking without having to talk. The smiley faces got some comments, and at the end after the grand finale, everyone applauded. It deserved it.

All in all, I think it was what I needed to carry me over to tomorrow.
