It's also raining.

Well then.

Restoring my computer to the last point of given functionality - yesterday morning - put everything back where it was supposed to be. I backed up my relevant data to my external hard drive and settled in to do something else.

Then it went "spwang" all over again.

The problem seems to be in the Symantic Antivirus, which was turned off for some reason, which seems to have let something in which destroys the explorer function.

I can get it back to the last point of functionality again, but I'm not sure how to fix the underlying issue. New antivirus, maybe.

Have you tried Avast! or AVG antivirus? Both have free versions and they're very good. And you can go to the Microsoft official site and search for Security Essentials, which does a really good job of kicking evil-ware in the butt.
