Posting from the computer lab.

Thank God I brought my external hard drive: the virus is a nasty one, and the computer has to be wiped. Good vibes and support would be appreciated.

It's now my belief that those who write computer viruses should be eaten by weasels.

Sending good vibes your way, hon. And YES to the weasels -- preferably really hungry ones with just a touch of rabies.

Possibly endangered wolverines, so their last act on earth is a beneficial one.

Rabies is too slow.

Weasels with a generous habanero dip.

or maybe an army of fire ants.

Old-school gladiatorial combat with tigers. Because the public loves tigers, and if there aren't any available, we can just make them fight to the death.

*hugs to Hannah*
*and good vibes, too*

I've missed you, darling! And I think wolverines and badgers are particularly appropriate.

While I'm at it, can I punch Dreamwidth in the face? Nobody involved in the website seems willing to help me figure out how to use it.

Punch away, darling!

What irritates me about how they've told you that they can't do a site scheme that works for you is because of accessibility issues for other people, is that: They HAVE site schemes that are accessible for said other people. You're asking for one accessible to YOU, and people with similar perceptions to yours, and I don't understand why that is so difficult. Not EVERY site scheme has to be equally accessible to everyone, right? That's why you have different ones, so people can choose, isn't it?

*shakes head* (And please do tell me if I'm off in my understanding of what's been happening...)

Part of the issue is that the way I expect to see data on the screen based on my years at Livejournal - the Graphic User Interface - isn't available because the precise layout won't be duplicated. And part of it is that there's a lot of weasel language on DW's part that means nobody is ever willing to come out and say "No." I've had some luck with individuals volunteering their services, but that's very slow going since it takes a lot for me to be bothered to try out the stuff they've got since I know it won't be the same as what I have now.

Evidently, the site scheme I'm using on LJ is outmoded, difficult to create, and incompatible with a lot of other things. To which I say: good. I know I shouldn't like being so petty and stubborn about this fairly singular aspect to my Internet presence, but I do, and I get a weird pleasure from it. Because I know I shouldn't be selfish, but they're giving me the opportunity for it - the idea that I should get what I want from them is touted over and over, so they should do what they can to help me.

It's kind of weird that I've had very little training in how to answer questions - just two classes on general reference librarianship - but I get the feeling I know how to do it better than the volunteers working for DW.

Eeep! That's no good at all!

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-07-06 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It could be worse: I could've lost everything. That almost happened to me at least once. It's a spectrum of badness, really.

Aaargh, I second you on the weasels. :(

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-07-06 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Lots of them! Hungry ones! HORDES OF WEASELS BENT ON REVENGE!

If there aren't enough weasels to take all the virus-writers out, we could resort to ferrets.

Or piranha.

I also don't get DW's objections to helping with a more usable layout for you. What ever happened to that celebrate-diversity thing of theirs?

[identity profile] hannahrorlove.livejournal.com 2010-07-06 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Throw in a few wolverines and tigers. After all, the public loves tigers, and there's really no better time to bring back old-school gladiatorial combat.

If DW could just COME OUT AND SAY 'WE CAN'T DO THAT NOW' I'd feel a lot better about it - "Ah, they're starting out, not even three years old, layouts aren't a major issue right now" - but because they haven't, I get the sense none of them have gotten any training on how to answer or defer questions. And that's what gets under my skin, because if I knew what I wanted isn't on the table at all, I could work around that, but since the possibility is there, it's frustrating that I can't quite get it.

Throw in a few piranhas for good measure.

*sends good thoughts*
