I saw about a minute of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" video at the gym today. My thoughts on the subject:

What the fresh Hell was that? I mean, what? What? Seriously, what?

I almost want someone to explain Lady Gaga to me in terms I understand, but at the same time I hope nobody can, because that means there's still this nice safe distance between me and her body of work, which I don't want any closer to me than it got today.

I admit, I love Lady Gaga's music. That said, I think my first reaction to her "Bad Romance" video (the first of her's I saw) was probably very similar to yours. Not my cuppa, I've got to say.

Her music in and of itself is something where I can understand the appeal thereof. But her videos and the things she does with cloth and her hair - where is she coming from with that? What's the appeal? Why has everyone gone so apeshit over her?

I have to admit I totally didn't get Lady Gaga at first, (and I'm not entirely sure I do now), but I totally appreciate her as an heir to the glam rockers of the '70s, and I do love "Bad Romance."

I don't know if this streams in the States, but if it does, check out last week's episode of Go! - "The Secret Glam Rock Diaries of Eleanor Wachtel." It's awesome on its own - I'm listening to it now, because I only caught bits and pieces of it live - but it might help put Lady Gaga in context as well.

Thinking about her in the context of glam rock helps. It doesn't quite get me to where I understand what she's trying to communicate with her costumes, but now I get some idea of the idea of the performance art.

It streams just fine here, and I'll give it a listen when I don't have to get up so early the next morning.

In "Bad Romance," Gaga is wearing Alexander McQueen dresses and shoes. Specifically the gold dress/jacket she wears at the very beginning, the white heels she wears in the bathtub (and matching black heels she wears later in the bed), the "lobster claw" shoes and gold outfit she wears in the middle, and the white outfit she wears at the end when she sets the dude on fire in the bed. She also wears Agent Provocateur lingerie.

I'm not a big fan of Gaga but I am a fan of Alexander McQueen.
