Poppy Seed Loaf; Chocolate-Banana Bread.

Both are from the Coffee House Cookbook by the Associated Students of the University of California, Davis.

Ingredients
1/3 cup poppy seeds
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. orange peel, grated
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 cup nuts, chopped
1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Directions
1. Soak poppy seeds in milk for at least several hours or, preferably, overnight.
2. Preheat oven to 350 F. Cream butter and brown sugar. Add eggs and orange peel.
3. Combine dry ingrediets and add to butter mixture alternately with milk and poppy seeds.
4. Add nuts and raisins.
5. Pour batter into a greased 9x5 loaf pan. Bake at 350 F for 50-55 minutes.

Note: I used a tablespoon of grated tangerine peel to play with the citrus flavor a little bit.

Ingredients
1/2 cup butter
1 cup mashed banana
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup nuts, chopped
1/3 cup milk

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Whip butter until fluffy. Add banana and eggs.
2. Combine dry ingredients and add to butter mixture.
3. Add milk. Stir in nuts.
4. Pour batter into greased 9x5 loaf pan. Bake at 350 for 40-45 minutes.

I'd be very tempted to use dried cranberries ("Craisins") instead of raisins in that poppy/orange loaf. Can you imagine?

Yes, if you switch the nutmeg to something like cinnamon or cardamom, which would go better with the cranberries' flavor.
