I think remixing the idea is just as valid as remixing the plot (but then the idea in my stories is always more important than the plot). If you're concerned that you might be breaking the "rules" of Remix, you could always contact a mod. I did that last year, as I wasn't sure I was fitting into the guidelines and I received helpful encouragement.
