Last of the first.
Did someone recommend Stubborn Mouths somewhere? I've gotten enough comments on it recently to make me wonder if that's the case.
Friday's the day I buy the bulk of my groceries - the farmer's market for fresh produce, followed by grocery stores for things like dish soap and salt. This morning, after the market with its onions and eggs, I went to one store to pick up some cottage cheese and then to another to get some pasta. Then I had to double back to the first store to get some canned tomatoes, because I hadn't seen the second store was out of the type I needed.
The first store is a tiny independent operation with narrow aisles that sells its own coffee and has a total of two registers, and the man who sold me the cottage cheese was the same man who sold me the tomatoes. I see him nearly every week and we've come to know each other. Not by name, but by regular encounters.
Then I went to the second store again, this time for frozen spinach. It's a neighborhood outpost of a major national chain with broad aisles and upwards of thirty registers, and Friday morning is a time when they're usually all in operation. I got in line, I got to the front, and amazingly, I got sent to the same guy as the first time. We were both a little surprised at it.
I honestly told him I'd forgotten the spinach, and he was genuinely amused at that.
