Get to the other side.
I'm not fully packed yet, but in my defense, I've got the things I need to pack picked out and set aside for me to pack up tomorrow morning when I finally load up my backpack and walk out the door. I'm charging up my phone to be safe and I'm bringing my iPad so I'll have access to email, and I'm not going to try to work out the last time I was in San Francisco except to say it's definitely been more than 14 years. I'm not going to try to parse if it's been 15, but it wouldn't surprise me.
One of the things I bought in preparation was a Not For Tourists guide to the city. It's six years out of date and its coffee shop recommendations aren't why I bought it: the maps are still good, and the fold-out MUNI guide is still accurate. It's also marked up somewhat. It took me a couple hours to talk myself into writing the addresses of the friends I'll be staying with on the appropriate neighborhood sections and marking where their houses are on the maps, and now that it's done, I'm glad I did it. I wrote a few directions, made a couple of notes, and I won't have to worry about wifi or phone battery life to easily find my way around.
The big things I want to hit up during the days are Angel Island, the Presidio, the Pacific from the westernmost point, and Sutro Tower. I'm pretty sure I can squeeze the What's Up, Doc? stairs in there, too, and there's always letting myself be surprised. The reason I'm going hasn't sunk in yet, and I don't know if it will until the lights go down and the screen lights up. I settled on one of my favorite blue dresses for the occasion. It's not every day I visit the symphony.
