Events.
As of tonight, I've been to five weddings and associated parties in the last three years. I'd put this one as the second most enjoyable, in significant part because the wedding was several weeks ago as a small, intimate ceremony with only about a dozen people in attendance including the bride and groom, and the one tonight was the dinner party that usually follows immediately. Scheduling it for later let the newly-weds deal with the legalities and the formalities without any concern about family photo opportunities.
It was a low-key affair tonight. They rented a small venue in their city, catered simply, and invited few enough people a full-sized sheet cake served them all. A friend served as the photographer. Decorations were glass bottles with fairy lights in them, and it was largely an occasion for people to meet each other and chat a while. I won't say I danced much, but I swayed a bit and enjoyed myself in the section of the room set aside for dancing. I took the PATH train and got there almost an hour early, and coming back, I was in my apartment well before midnight.
Most people were relatives or work colleagues; I was one of the friends and met the bride through fandom some years back. One of the night's highlights came when someone asked me if I was related to the bride or the groom.
Without any self-consciousness, I told her, "I'm a friend of Dorothy's."
