Monday journeys.
There's never a good time to have a problem. But there's sometimes convenient times. Case in point: today's adventures.
Last night around midnight, the internet stopped working on my computer - the wifi couldn't make any connections. I figured that since it was midnight, I might as well go to bed, and turning it off and on again would probably fix it. My iPad was picking up the wifi just fine, so I didn't think anything of it, but this morning it still wasn't working.
I'd seen this before, and used the iPad to look up tech support on the wifi dongle and see if various ideas would help. They all produced absolutely nothing of value: it could see there was a network to connect to and couldn't connect to it.
I pulled out my old laptop to see if that was working. Not a chance: it wasn't getting any wifi, either.
The iPhone and iPad were doing okay, though, so I figured I could reset the router and that'd do the trick. Wrong again: this time everything was offline. But by making things worse, I isolated the source of the problem and was able to figure out what was wrong, even if I couldn't figure out why.
Through sheer luck, the company was able to send someone out to see me early this afternoon, so there weren't several days of waiting. On the phone with tech support, and in person with the tech guy some hours later, I asked for technical explanations and didn't get any, so I still don't understand what happened - just that something with the signal wasn't working, wouldn't work, wasn't something that could get back to work, and the router needed to be replaced. Once that happened, wifi came back on all my devices. I hope this isn't something I need to do again, or for at least another few years.
And at least it happened when I didn't have anywhere I needed to go and there wasn't anyone I needed to see, letting me hang while on hold and not worry about having to call in from work or an appointment.
