September 5 2006 - September 30 2023.

Seventeen years and twenty-five days. So goes my Netflix account. I couldn't in good conscience keep giving them money, not when they've stopped sending out DVDs and sustaining the best movie library ever assembled. Yesterday was the last day they mailed anything. I've got a couple more discs coming, but it's mostly a formality. They're on their way to me. There's no reason to keep going.

Technically, they cancelled my DVD plan for me, so this was me cutting off the streaming service. I can piggyback on other accounts, and find other ways to watch things. I'll miss the DVD service more. Technically, I'm good until the end of the current billing period, so I have a couple of weeks to hang around in case I change my mind. I'm not going to change my mind. Mostly, this has me thinking people that don't like art shouldn't be put in charge of managing it, in whatever way, shape, or form that entails.

Tonight, I log out for the last time and let nature take its course.

We'd cancelled the DVD service around 2020 I think, but this year we cancelled the streaming service for the first time. For several years we had the streaming for free as part of the DVD package, and in the first years it still was fairly inexpensive to access streaming as well even after it became a separate subscription.

Really after 2017 we should have put Netflix on the same rotation schedule as the rest of the streamers but part of it was that I wasn't the one paying the bill and part of it was that it still offered so much that we never stopped using it entirely.

However now between the variety of streamers and the amount of content they offer, it made no sense to keep it around to watch maybe a few days a month. We'll pick it up again for a few months at some point, but it stopped being the go-to several years ago.
