Challenge #13: In your own space, rec three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Three fics, three vids, six fandoms.
what you make, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Rupert Giles/Jenny Calendar - proof that a plurality of voices makes fandom stronger, this fic asks, "What if Jenny lived and everyone had a happy ending?" It answers that splendidly, and probably not in the way you'd expect, while keeping the show's dedication towards discussing genuine concerns, issues, and traumas by turning them into a fairly literal metaphors and manifestations, which doesn't happen often enough in fic for my liking.
But a Step Between, Justified, archive-locked - what also doesn't happen often enough in fic for my liking is using a fantastical premise or AU to offer a new way of looking at the source canon and deepen my enjoyment of it. Yes, this is omegaverse. Yes, this is what happens when tropes become genres: the author knows how it works, the readers know how it works, the author knows the readers know and can get to the kind of character exploration and examination that's available when there's fantastical elements to the premise. Omegaverse is rarely my thing and it works here because of the depth brought to the characters, where the scenario allows for a more direct than usual exploration and examination of how Boyd and Raylan think of themselves, where they come from, and how they want to live in the world. Because an alpha and an omega is a socially acceptable relationship, even between two men, but for that to happen, Raylan would have to take the blow to his social standing by coming out as an omega, making his life a choice between being socially acceptable in a place he was ashamed of in a way he couldn't bear to live with, or be an outcast and be happy he'd left behind everything he knew.
That Kind of Day, MCU - what happened to the person whose truck Steve "borrowed"? This is what happened to them. This is the kind of thing I love about fandom, where there's room to tell a great little story.
Queen of the Rodeo, Jackass, archive-locked - another kind of thing I love about fandom, where there's the ever-present opportunity to fully commit to whatever idea grabs hold of you and doesn't let go. You can't get this kind of sincerity anywhere else.
Grey Ghost, MASH - a well-told character study of a man of faith.
So Pure, Homicide: Life on the Street - another well-told character study, and a vid I'm delighted has finally been uploaded onto the internet. I saw this over a decade ago and it stayed fresh in my mind for all those years. I'm glad to see it whenever I want, and I love being able to blow new fans' minds when they find out both that people vid on VCRs, and that this is what people could do with them.
