In welcome developments, I emailed my boss and had it confirmed my position, such as it is, will continue through the end of the calendar year. Work tasks will come when they come, so I'm more or less on retainer for whatever research and data management they need done. It's not a new job, and it's not a long-term position, even part-time. But it's a relief to have a timetable, and it's nice to know there's a couple weeks coming that I can take time to get ready to crunch down and brace.

Also, someone in a nearby building was getting rid of a lot of their books, so now I've got a few Calvin & Hobbes collections to read for comfort and pleasure.
